KTU Ph.D Regulations — Overview
APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) offers research programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry) and Mathematics, Management, and allied interdisciplinary areas leading to the award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). Eligibility, selection, registration, supervision, submission, evaluation of thesis, and conduct of Viva-voce are regulated by the University.

👤 Full-Time Scholars
University scholars admitted with or without fellowship to pursue research full-time.

🏫 Part-Time (Faculty)
Faculty members of University Departments or affiliated colleges admitted to pursue research while continuing to work.

🏢 External Part-Time
Scholars working in research organisations or R&D centres recognised by KTU for external registration.
✅ Minimum Qualifications
- 1Engineering / Technology: Master's degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture, or Master's by Research, with a minimum CGPA of 6.5. Admission to the Master's programme must have been based on a valid GATE score.
- 2Basic Sciences / Mathematics: Master's degree with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 and qualification in a national-level examination such as UGC-CSIR NET.
- 3Management: Master's degree or equivalent PG Diploma in Management with a minimum CGPA of 6.0, a Bachelor's degree with good academic record, and qualification in CAT / JMET / XAT / MAT / ATMA / GATE / UGC.
- SC/STSC/ST & Differently-abled: Eligible with a minimum CGPA of 5.5 at Master's level across all categories above. All other conditions remain the same as the general category.
The following candidates are exempted from the GATE / NET / CAT requirement for Ph.D registration:
- (a) Candidates with the qualifying Master's degree and minimum 3 years of teaching experience in AICTE-approved colleges or NBA-accredited departments.
- (b) Candidates with the qualifying degree and minimum 3 years of industry experience in a reputed organisation, as assessed by the University.
- (c) Candidates who hold a fellowship or scholarship from a Government Agency.
